PEOPLE AND POPULATION
World population growth
•POPULATION: All the people who live in one place.
Introduction to Demography
•DEMOGRAPHY: The study of the population.
–Size: number of people.
–Structure: how it is classified.
–Distribution: where the population lives in a territory
–Changes: how the population is developing.
The Population is always changing
–BIRTH RATE: the number of people who are born EACH YEAR.
–MORTALITY RATE: the number of people who die EACH YEAR.
–MIGRATION: the movement of the people between places. Types:
•Emigration: people who leave their country
•Immigration: people who arrive in a new country
Migration movements depends on:
–Push factors: Reasons why people leave their countries
•War, famine, lack of work
–Pull factors: Reasons that attract people to go to another countries.
•Better work, better living conditions, better climate.
The Population density
•POPULATION DENSITY: How many people live in one square kilometre (km2).
•POPULATION DISTRIBUTION: Shows us where people live within a particular area
•Which is the most densely populated autonomous community in Spain?
•Which archipelago has the higher population density?
•Which autonomous community has a population density of 96?
•Which three autonomous communities have the same population density?
Population changes and classification
•HOW DOES THE POPULATION CHANGE? Two factors
–Natural growth rate: It is the difference between the birth rate and the mortality rate.
–Real growth rate: It is the natural growth rate + the migration.
•WHO MAKES UP THE POPULATION? Population can be:
-Inactive: people who do not work to earn money (children, students, pensioners and people who cannot work for health reasons).
-Active: people who are over 16 and can work. They can be:
-Employed: Doing a paid work.
-Unemployed: Not doing a paid work.
What might happen to the population of Spain in the future?
Population in Europe
•Europe

-The population in Europe is not evenly distributed.
•The European Union (EU)
–It is a group of 27 European countries.
–It has an area of more than four million km2.
–It has a population of more than 500 million people.
–The distribution of the population is uneven.
–The population is increasing.
